DIY - Roll Up Pencil Case

If you still remember my DIY Skirt from my pair of old jeans, this is the left over leg area, spring load clamp from a torn old drawstring bag, shoelace and some of the leftover cloths from my mother in law which I'm going to convert it into a roll up pencil case like this.

How to Make a Roll Up Pencil Case

Items Needed:

Leftover JEANS fabric / material (I have used the leftover leg area) for exterior
Leftover Cloth for interior
Fabric Batting (medium - not too hard not too soft)
Zipper 7.5 inches.
Spring Load Clamp 1piece
Rope / Shoelace for the clamp approximately 61 cm / 24 inches length
Biasing Tape (about 200 cm length)
Thick Flat Rubber Band (3/4" to 1" thickness & at least 70 cm length)
Scissor
Thread Unpick Tool
Tacking Needles
Sewing Needle
Sewing Machine
Iron

Directions:

1. Preparation work.
  • Unpick all the stitches from the fabric if you are doing a recycle work. Trim off any unwanted edges.
  • Cut fabrics according to the measurement chart below.
  • The rounded edge of the rectangle is about 2 cm radius curve for Part A, Part B, and Part C. Part C only requires two side of the piece to be rounded.

2. Start by making the pocket using Part C in the above.
  • Align together the Part C OUTER + BATTING and iron the material together.
  • Draw the measurements as follows on the batting side.
  • Place the INNER piece behind the OUTER. Secure the 4 corners of the pieces together by using the tacking needles.
  • On the sewing machine stitch along the green line.
  • Cut along the blue line. Be sure not to cut the sewing stitches. This will be the opening for the zipper later on.
  • Once done, remove tacking needles and flip in the INNER piece into the zipper opening. Now you will have OUTER > BATTING > INNER. This will hide the stitch we did earlier on.
  • Iron the pieces so that it is aligned and in place.
3. Attach the zipper for the pocket.
  • Face the OUTER side up then align the zipper to the zipper opening.
  • Using tacking needles, hold the zipper in place.
  • On the sewing machine, swap over to the zipper foot and begin sewing the zipper into position.
4. Prepare the Bottom Flap (Part E) by folding the piece into half length wise and iron the piece.
5. Prepare the Main Panel (Part B) and iron them together.
6. Joining the inside pieces together.
  • Place the Main Panel (Part B) INNER side up. Then place the pieces to join as following diagram.
  • On the sewing machine sew along the green lines starting from the bottom flap piece and end at the pocket in a single run. Be sure to curve at the corners.
  • Sew one more line parallel to the zipper top to cover the edge of the elastic band.

7. Prepare the Top Flap (Part E) by folding the piece into half length wise and iron the piece. Sew the inside 1 cm from the edge  and then flip it inside out. The iron / pressed down the pieces.
8. Place the top flap on to the other side of Step 6 and sew along the green lines as below.
As of this step you will get something like following diagram

9. Now we will prepare and sew the loops of the elastic band.
  • On the piece below elastic band, measure 1 cm and mark until the end.
  • On the elastic band, measure 2 cm and mark the same amount marked in earlier step.
  • Align the first 2 cm mark of elastic band on the 1 cm mark then sew. Continue until the end.
  • Once done, trim the access elastic band.
10. Prepare the Main Panel (Part A) and then align to the assembled inner piece and tack them. Then sew them up along the edge.
11. Tack the bias tape on the inner side and then use the sewing machine and sew them up. Cut the corner of the bias tape to release the tension. Fold the bias tape to the outside then use a blind stitch to sew up the bias tape to complete.
12. Prepare the shoelace. find the centre point and sew it on the outer side of the pocket edge. Slot in the spring load clamp and you are done.
      * You can also do it without the spring load clamp. Just go around and tie it up. It works too.
